Botswana Democratic Party (BDP)’s Mr. Maitewa Rapula and Court Tolobu of the Alliance for Progressives (AP) will tussle it out for the Lentsweletau West ward during by-elections slated for December 18.
This is after the two qualified for candidature as per the Electoral Act, during nominations held recently. The Returning Officer, Ms. Baopedi Othusitse confirmed that the exercise went smoothly and that the office would be placing names of the two candidates in public places for scrutiny by the voters.
Lentsweletau west by-election follows the death of Councillor Botokanyana Motoroko, who won under the BDP ticket in the 2019 general elections. He passed away in June. The ward is among the 11 vacant council wards around the country.
Meanwhile, principal elections officer, Ms. Masego Ndlovu confirmed readiness for the by-election, with polling stations at Sekhukhwane, Ditshoso, Sasakwe, council offices, and Boseja ward in Lentsweletau. She confirmed that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) had embarked on public education to ensure that voters knew what was expected of them on the day.
Ms. Ndlovu further stated that IEC would introduce a new initiative of queue marshals and SHE officers, to ease the election process.
She urged voters to have their voters cards ready and make duplicates for lost ones to avoid last minutes rush.
